An interesting spat is potentially developing between one of Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II's lead developers and the team behind Shadow of Mordor. Yesterday, a lengthy gameplay walkthrough was debuted for Shadow of Mordor and, as we noted at the time, it bears a remarkable resemblance to some of the staple gameplay elements found in the Assassin's Creed franchise.
Charles Randall, who currently works for Capybara Games, but worked for Ubisoft on the first two Assassin's Creed games took to Twitter after viewing the footage and accused the game of using Assassin's Creed II's code and assets.
It's possible that Ubisoft licensed the relevant code/assets to Monolith, who are responsible for Shadow of Mordor, but Ubisoft have declined to comment on the matter and Eurogamer are quoting Shadow of Mordor's design director as having said that "by the time you have stealth and melee combat and you're hunting guys behind enemy lines, the comparisons maybe come out at that point. It definitely wasn't something we were consciously going for".
