One thing that was made clear during Nintendo's Nintendo Direct stream earlier today was that the company is now interested in experimenting with the free-to-play market and with cross-buy.
In February, Pokemon Shuffle will be made available for free as a free-to-play title on the 3DS eShop, and will incorporate familiar match-three gameplay.
Then, in March, Nintendo will be releasing Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars as a digital download. This will be cross-buy compatible, meaning you can buy it for your Wii U and still download it on your 3DS as well.
This follows the firm signalling to shareholders earlier last year that it will adopt business models that have become popular amongst rivals in recent years.
