Sony president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has told GameSpot that with the PlayStation 3 Sony tried to build a "super computer", which led to a high price point and a relatively tough console to develop for. Sony believes that the reversal of this philosophy is key reason for the success of the PlayStation 4.
"So what we really focused on for PS4 was ease of development and ease of use by consumers and developers," said Yoshida. "And I think that's paying off really handsomely."
This ease of development has attracted a large number of independent developers to the platform and their support is "really, really helping" the PlayStation 4 overall.
The wide range of AAA titles and indie titles has created a "vibrant, exciting offering for consumers," Yoshida added. "I feel like it can be compared to the excitement of the PS1 days almost."
Yoshida concluded by saying that many people who didn't own a console last generation are now returning to the console market.
"We see numbers of people coming back to console," he said. "Many people [who own a PS4] didn't used to have any last-gen console, even Nintendo Wii. Those people are coming back."
