This game was released when i was just a little boy who enjoyed spend his evenings playing playstation and nintendo. I never had the pleasure to play this title until now because as a child, you don't have the knowledge to understand the deep story and characters (not to mention the ESRB and the inhability to buy it). It was until this moment that i had the pleasure of play it. First of all i want to say that i'm no rookie at metal gear games or stealth games; the first metal gear i played was the peace walker and then the portable ops. It was because of these titles that i wanted to give ia try to the first metal gear for PS2. So i bought the HD edition and began to play it.
My first thought of the game was, and i'm quoting my own words: "What the fuck is wrong with the camera?". Yes, because of my previous experiences, i was rather confused with the camera setting and the inhability to change it like in Snake eater. So i continued to play, and god, it was a hard game to adapt. In this modern age where pretty much the game holds your hand, MGS2 was like going into the war without a rifle. It hardly took me like 3 hours (the tanker campaing) to adapt to the gameplay, and even more to know all the fighting techniques, it was until the last part of the game that i realize that you could carry enemies and hide them. It was frustrating at the beging and most of the game, but once you get the idea that this is not a stealth game, this IS the stealth game, that you begin to understand the whole concept of the game and start to enjoy it.
The gameplay, if complicated for the non-initiated, is a shining star in the game once you get the hold of it, but what really shines above everything, is the story. You won't find a more intriging, action filled, complicated and educational story that those of the metal gear saga. The unique characters, the conspiration theories, the plot that twists at the right time every time and the classes about history, warfare and war devices are certanly the best part of the game. If it wasn't because the science fiction elements, wich by the way are the plot of the whole thing, it would be considered as real a navy covert operation. I would've prefer to play as Snake the whole campaing or at least the majority of it, but Raiden is an intersting character and his relationship with Rose is a good side story to hear.
Aside from Snake not being the main character and the problem with the camera at the begining, i can say that this is one of the best games ever concived. Perhaps the only big issue, and that depends on the player opinions, was the ending. It was sort of inconclusive and wierd, much like the last chapters of evangelion if you ever saw the anime. Yet, it was one hell of a ride, now its time to beat it in the extreme level and may Kojima have mercy on my soul

Still, since you mentioned that you also were a Nintendo gamer - may I suggest that you try the Metal Gear Solid remake on the GameCube. Since the 1st Metal Gear in my opinion - is the best in the series. And it would be a crime not to experience that game - especially since you are getting into the Metal Gear franchise. Cheers.
