Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is a major step forward for the PS3. R&C Tools of Destruction is the first in the Future Trilogy and is extremely fun. At the start of the game, Ratchet and Clank are working on a Hover Bike (as seen in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando/ Locked and Loaded). The duo then get a call from Captain Qwark saying that he was under attack at the Planetary Defense Center. Ratchet and Clank then make their way and find out that the last Cragmite left alive is striving for galactic dominance. When the two meet him, he states that the Lombaxes (Ratchet's species) was responsible for the extermination of the Cragmites. According to various characters, the Cragmites went on a crazy rampage and attacked planet after planet. When they reached Fastoon (Lombax planet), the Cragmites were ultimately defeated. Lombaxes are known for their incredible craftsmanship and creativity with weapons. When the Cragmites attacked however, the Lombaxes quickly created a weapon that vanquished all the Cragmites. Later on, you learn that Percival Tacyon is responsible for the entire invasion currently happening. You then learn that Tacyon destroyed the Lombaxes as revenge. After some time hunting for the tiny emperor, Ratchet learns that the weapon used to destroy the Cragmites was something called the Dimensionator; a device created to open portals into other dimensions, and that the Lombaxes used it to escape from Tacyon. During its first use, the machine backfired and instead eliminated the Cragmites. When Tacyon locates it, he tempts Ratchet by opening a portal to the dimension that the Lombaxes were hiding in. This then leads to the whole adventure of getting to the Lombaxes in the later games.
Gameplay wise, you are introduced to new weapons made by a new company named Grummelnet. They create more powerful and creative weapons than Gadetron and Megacorp (Ratchet and Clank 1 and going commando respectively). These range from flame cannons, Synthenoids (attack robots), Plasma Whips, and the signature R.Y.N.O. In this game, the R.Y.N.O must be built by finding the pieces in various planets. Unlike the previous version in the PS2 games, this R.Y.N.O fires lasers in its first level and then even more lasers in the final level of the gun (You get about 3000 ammo capacity). New characters also make their debut in this game. Pirates (literally, pirates) are the main enemy aside from Tacyon, a new female character named Talwyn Apogee, war bots named Cronk and Zephyr, and the Zoni.
In the previous game, Up Your Arsenal, multiplayer was implemented. However, since the PS3 was relatively new, multiplayer was cut from Tools of Destruction and the later titles.
Visually, Insomniac did a great job with how Ratchet looked, the environments, and other characters.
5 out of 5
Great Visuals, great acting, intense story, awesome gameplay, but no multiplayer.
