At the New GameContinue screen enter the following codes
Hard Mode
Reach the last boss Mr X and let him defeat you until you have 3 continues left On the quotNew GameContinuequot screen hold Run and press Select to reset the game If done right youll be right back at the Continue screen and it will say quotLevel 2quot on top which means the game will be in hard mode
