In Demon Gaze, players take on the role of Oz, a young man with the ability to seal demons in a powerful magic eye, which makes Oz a Demon Gazer. The game is a traditional Japanese dungeon crawler/role playing hybrid game which is played from a first person perspective.
Dungeon Crawling
The gameplay can be split into two different types. The first is the dungeon crawling aspect of Demon Gaze. Oz, together with a cast of secondary characters that you can create, undertakes to slay demons and acquire loot by exploring the dungeons of Mythrid.
Character Classes
There are seven different character classes in the game (not including the Demon Gazer himself), which come from five different races. You can also customise their names, genders, voices and figures.
Enemies
Enemies in the game take the form of demons which you encounter whilst making your way through the dungeons in the game. These demons are part machine and part organic, who transform when they go into rampage mode. Once defeated, they are captured within Oz's mysterious magic eye. They can then be summoned by the player in subsequent battles.
You can also purchase gems that spawn monsters which drop unique items in a 'Treasure Hunting Circle', or alternatively take on the 'Demon Circle' to win a Demon Key which will allow you to summon allied demons in battle.
Allied demons take on three different forms - offensive, defensive, explorative - and have their own unique abilities. However, over-use a demon and it will go into 'rampage' mode, attacking both allies and enemies.
Dungeons
Demon Gaze makes the dungeon crawling gameplay more user-friendly. A complete mini-map and overmap can be viewed at any time so you shouldn't get lost and you can draw on the mini-map memo-style to plan out your routes (you can even share these notes with other players).
There's also an innovative auto-pilot feature that will take the player to any unexplored areas so that completionists need not miss anything.
Relationships
The other half of the gameplay takes place in the safety of town and the Dragon Princess Inn. Here you can advance your relationships with characters in the game, thus improving your party's effectiveness, and spend the loot you've acquired battling demons.
Relationships are advanced through conversing with NPCs, and certain conversations trigger special cut scenes. It's also possible to adjust the game's difficulty by conversing with certain characters.
Loot, meanwhile, is spent paying rent at the Inn and improving your party. The rooms you rent at the Inn can also be customised with various items of furniture you buy or find in the dungeons. This furniture can even boost your party's stats.
There are three levels of rooms at the inn:
On the first level is a bathouse and access to other levels, on the second level are the rooms you and your party stay in, and on the third level are shops (items, armour, and weapons), the manager's room and Roona's room. As you explore dungeons, you can find furniture you can use to decorate your characters' rooms, increasing their stats.
