Tips and Strategies
Choosing a Country
Choosing a country that is likely to spread the disease fast requires some knowledge about world culture and living conditions. Countries that are poor and have issues with things such as health care and sanitation systems will initially spread the disease much faster than powerful countries. Perhaps the easiest country to start in is India, which has a high population and a low medical budget.
Infecting v. Killing
Infecting is almost always more important than killing, especially in the late game. Don't be afraid to get rid of some of your more deadly symptoms if you're having trouble spreading to a last few countries, and always make sure your plague isn't killing faster than it's infecting.
Spending DNA Points
Keep in mind that while DNA points are common at the beginning, they become much more rare late in the game, so ration the ones you have. Buy upgrades in all three categories (Transmission, Symptoms, Abilities) to lessen the change of a cure being found. However, early in the game, focus mostly on transmission because infecting is harder than killing late in the game.
Free DNA with Nano-Virus
Genetic Codes are unlocked by winning games on any difficulty. One of these is Sympto-Stasis, which stops the cost of symptoms increasing when you evolve them. Insomnia and Paranoia will provide free DNA. Buy these two symptoms, then evolve and devolve Paranoia repeatedly. Your DNA will increase for as long as you do this.
Buying Symptoms
Different symptoms will greatly impact your game. If you want the plague to spread quickly while going mostly unnoticed, buy Coughing, Rash, and Necrosis. If you want to increase the severity and make it harder to kill, buy Insomnia, Cysts, Insanity and Coma. If you have most of the world infected and want to kill quickly, buy Total Organ Failure.
Symptom Combos
Certain symptoms grant small boost if bought together. It's often advised to buy both if you already plan on buying one. Also, certain Transmission options will also greatly help the combos.
- Oops: Diarrhoea, Sneezing
- Profuse Bleeding: Haemophelia, Skin Lesions, Blood Transmissions
- Projectile Vomiting: Coughing, Vomiting
- Swine Flu: Coughing, Diarrhoea, Insomnia, Nausea, Pneunomia, Vomiting, Livestock Transmissions
- Public Defecation: Diarrhoea, Insanity
- Walking Dead: Anaemia, Insomnia
Necroa Virus Combos
These work just like typical symptom combos, but are only available when using the Necroa Virus.
- Vampire Bat: Vampiric Hunger, Bat Transmissions
- Tank: Anabolic Boost, Bone Dysplasia
- Spitter: Naja Mortis, Enhanced Sensory Integration
- Boomer: Autothysis: Liquefactive Necrosis Ability
- Runner: Enhanced Motor Control, Engorged Quadriceps Ability
- Cranial Dispersion: Cranial Elephantitis, Air 3 Transmission
- Walking Contradiction: Photophobia, Cathameral Shift
- Bath Time: Autophagia, Polyphagia, Cannibalism
Pay Attention to the News
News headlines constantly scroll at the top of the screen. They often display important information that will change the game, possibly to your advantage. If it says that birds are migrating, make your plague spread through birds. If it says scientist are curing a certain symptom, don't purchase that symptom and sell it if you already have it. If the iTouch Cure device is created, make sure to buy Sweating and Rash symtoms to make it irrelevant.
London Olympics
The London Olympics are an event that occurs in most playthroughs. Make sure the plague is unnoticed and has some drug resistance before this happens. If you do, London will likely become infected, giving you easy access to one of the most powerful countries.
Difficult Countries
The three hardest countries to kill are Madagascar, Greenland and Morocco. Madagascar and Greenland are both islands with extreme climates, while Morocco only has road access and is quick to shut down their borders and kill livestock. Infecting these three countries early on is very helpful.
Virus and Bio-Weapon
These plague types are unpredictable and will mutate themselves, but they can be partially controlled by using their special abilities. Use these to limit their deadliness until late game, at which point you can let their own mutations do a significant portion of your killing for you. Typically, you won't have to waste much DNA on deadly symptoms.
Parasite and Prion
These plague types are the hardest to notice, which can be used to your advantage. Parasite will infect very quickly, but will get very little DNA points at the end, so save up or else you won't be able to make it deadly once you've infected everyone. Prion is even harder to notice, but it's slow, so make sure to stall as much as possible to spread the plague.
Fungus
Fungus spreads to other countries slower than any other. Use a few Spore abilities early in the game to give yourself a headstart, then focus almost entirely on extra Transmission. Don't risk giving it any symptoms that are even slightly noticeable.
Save
Saving your game is always a good idea. It's impossible to tell when a random mutation or world event will highly impact your game, so it's good to have a backup save to load up when things go sour rather than starting from scratch again.
