Sword of Fargoal 2 is a 2D dungeon-crawler role-playing game. It is a reimagining of the Commodore 64 classic, Sword of Fargoal, with more dungeons, characters to play as, items and more.
Character Creation
The player creates their own character before starting the game. There are a variety of classes to choose from, such as Fighter, Ranger, Thief, Wizard, and more, with male and female versions for each. The appearance of the character is completely customizable, as the player chooses their outfits, armor, weapons, and additional items.
Exploration
The game tasks players with exploring the dungeon environments with the ultimate goal of building up the character and finding the "Sword of Fargoal." Each floor is shrouded in a fog that uncovers as the player explores, with enemies and treasure alike hidden. Along the way, the player will enounter locked doors and containers, which they can find ways to unlock or destroy in order to find unique collectibles or progress through the world. There are also traps, such as a treasure chest exploding when opening it, but some traps can be beneficial to the player, as they can set them to damage enemies.
Combat
While exploring, the character will frequently encounter a large variety of monsters. In order to fight these off, the player may acquire one of many types of weapons, including swords, rods, traps, spells, amulets and ranged weapons, depending on the player's class.
Defeating enemies, breaking chests and exploring the dungeons will provide new weapons and armor in order to increase the player's combat ability. The player is able to withstand a certain amount of hits before dying, as shown on their health bar, and there is no way to gauge an enemy's strength before fighting, although the player can flee at any time once they engage them.
Leveling
Defeating enemies allows the player to gain experience, which in turn improves their level. Characters with higher levels will have better stats, making them more powerful and giving them new abilities. The player can also collect gold, which can be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades.
