A.N.N.E is a 2D platformer/shooter hybrid game. The player controls a little robot character called Number 25 who explores the open world levels of the planet Gomi in search of his robot friend, A.N.N.E. The game has a Metroid-style map to help chart location and progress.
Basic Gameplay
The basic gameplay for the game can be divided into two main areas, on foot exploration and spaceship combat. It is described as a Metroidvania game, meaning there is an emphasis on backtracking to previously explored areas once you have obtained a new item.
On-Foot
One of the ways Number 25 can explore the map is on foot, where he has access to a number of different weapons. Some abilities he has here is dashing and he has a variety of guns at his disposal. One method of exploring comes in the way of shooting switches that will make platforms appear, although they also retract after some time passes.
Spaceship
The other way that Number 25 can explore the map is via his spaceship, The Great Whale, either by remote access (from a nearby save point) or by directly getting into it. The ship has guns that you can use to get rid of large enemies, and it can also be used to remove obstacles blocking the path while on-foot. These obstacles can be placed in such a way as to open up new paths for Number 25 when on foot.
RPG Elements
A.N.N.E also features RPG elements. The player can advance levels (enemies also have levels) and improve stats such as hit points, defense points, etc by collecting energy crystals from fallen enemies. Crystals also act as currency in the game for purchasing special abilities that can be equipped and upgraded. You can also customize your ship with new parts.
