The Adventures of Square
Given that The Adventures of Square is a completely free game, there is literally nothing to stop you from downloading it right away. The Adventures of Square is an FPS based in a cartoony world in which you play as a purple square taking on a bunch of blue circles. It’s a quirky set-up that is well-executed, with striking colours taking up the whole screen as you strafe from enemy to enemy.
Just like in a traditional shooter, The Adventures of Square is fast and hectic, with multiple enemies taking up the screen as they slowly walk towards you in their own odd way. At first I was shocked at how familiar that controls were, thinking to myself that the developer (Matt Tropiano) must have spent ages tweaking them in order to get as close to the feel of the original Doom as possible. Once I'd finished, I spoke with Matt Tropiano, and found out that this is actually a modified Doom engine.
You can download The Adventures of Square from the official website.
LA Cops
Looking at LA Cops from afar, it could easily be confused for a 3D Hotline Miami, and this meant I just had to give it a go. Jumping straight into the demo without any foreknowledge of the game, what I found was an oddly familiar top-down shooter experience.
Where LA Cops deviates from the tried and tested formula of most top-down shooters, though, is in its appearance (which is fully 3D), and in allowing you to utilise a team of two characters. This allows you to send one squadmate through one door while you kick down a second door with another character. You’re able to switch between these characters on the fly, which gives you multiple options for breaching buildings.
LA Cops is already available to purchase via Steam.
The Escapists
With its cute pixel graphics, you could be forgiven for expecting The Escapists to be a fairly simplistic action title. You’d be wrong, of course, as under its layer of child-like humour The Escapists manages to portray a surprisingly dark and complex prison underworld.
Playing the demo at EGX Rezzed, I was tasked with finding three items to combine and turn into a shovel (these being a tool handle, a sheet of metal, and a roll of duct tape). Once made, it was my job to go about my character's regular prison routine without raising any suspicion, from showering with all the other men to working out. The daily routine is both mundane and yet fun at the same time, as you secretly plan and execute your escape under the noses of your AI guards.
The Escapists is already available to purchase via Steam and Xbox One.
Over 9000 Zombies
Your only goal in Over 9000 Zombies to last as long as possible against an endless horde of zombies. It’s a twin joystick affair where one stick controls movement and the other controls firing direction, but as repetitive as the gameplay can become it's always fun to mow down hundreds of zombies and try to eke out a few extra seconds of survival.
Mundane and trivial when you first start out, the game's difficulty soon ramps up, with zombies seemingly becoming bullet sponges within no time at all. It's at this point that Over 9000 Zombies becomes exciting, challenging, and actually very engrossing.
Over 9000 Zombies can be purchased through Steam.
