PS4 Top Selling Platform in the US in July, Xbox One Sales Up 44%

The PlayStation 4 was the top selling platform in the US in July, according to a statement released by Sony which drew on NPD figures.

Microsoft, meanwhile, announced that Xbox One sales were up 44 percent year-over-year to 189,000 units. The number of active global Xbox Live users is also up 22 percent. Interestingly, the Xbox 360 was the second best-selling console software wise.

"One reason for the stronger 360 sales may have been the news of backward compatibility for the Xbox One coming out of E3," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "Consumers may have felt safer buying 360 games knowing that they will be able to play them on Xbox One if they choose to upgrade."

"After 21 months, combined Xbox One and PS4 hardware unit sales are close to 50 percent higher than the combined sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 after 21 months on the market," noted Callahan.

Nintendo announced that Splatoon has now sold 1.6 million units worldwide as of June 30. The game sold 85,000 units in June in the US, bringing US lifetime sales for the game up to 540,000 units.

Nintendo 3DS sales were up 35 percent in the first seven months of 2015 when compared to the same time period in 2014.

LEGO: Jurassic World was the best-selling stand-alone game in July, but when hardware bundles are factored in Batman: Arkham Knight takes the top spot. Both games are published by Warner Bros., which is also the top publisher in 2015 to-date.

Minecraft was the third best-selling game in July, followed by Grand Theft Auto V. Rory Mcllroy PGA Tour was at four, The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited was fifth, and Destiny was sixth.
