The install base for virtual reality is expected to hit 70 million by the end of 2017, according to analyst firm SuperData.
VR hardware revenue is expected to reach $8.8 billion, while VR software is expected to achieve $6.1 billion in revenue. The firm made these estimates following the launch of the Samsung Gear VR, which has received positive reviews.
"Initially, affordable smartphone devices will drive the bulk of sales as consumers first explore virtual reality before committing to the more expensive platforms," said SuperData's Director of Research, Stephanie Llamas. "After this first wave, however, it will be especially console gamers that will spur growth of high-end VR devices."
SuperData believes that 31 percent of PlayStation 4 owners will purchase PlayStation VR, while 18 percent of PC gamers will purchase an Oculus Rift. Both headsets launch next year.
