Warner Bros. have just announced Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. A third person action game based in Tolkien's Hobbit/Lord of the Rings universe, the game is being developed by Monolith Productions in collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson and the artists at Weta Workshop.
Players take on the role of Talion, a valiant ranger whose family is slain in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor, moments before his own life is taken. Talion is resurrected by a Spirit of vengeance and empowered with Wraith abilities, at which point he ventures into Mordor and vows to destroy those who have wronged him.
Shadow of Mordor boasts "new gameplay mechanics [for] the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players". Other gameplay features include enemies that are all individually unique, a 'Nemesis' system (where enemy relationships are shaped by the player's actions and decisions), and the ability to 'craft' your own battles and enemies in a dynamic world that remembers and adapts to your choices. Plenty of big boasts and jargon, but as ever the proof will really be in the pudding; here's hoping Monolith can deliver on its potential.
