Japanese publisher Kadokawa has bought out Dark Souls II developer From Software. Kadokawa will have the deal, which will see Kadokawa own 80% of From Software, finalised on May 21. The plan is to turn the game developer into a subsidiary of Kadokawa so that they can work on core games alongside Kadokawa Games.
From Software was actually an independent developer prior to this move, and the majority of their games were sold through Bandai Namco and SEGA (although in Japan Dark Souls II was self-published).
Siliconera are reporting that From Software CEO, Naotoshi Zin, laid out the following key reasons for the sale:
To further expand platforms. Everything from simple hardware to cloud network.
The requirement to better correspond to regions (more global, more local).
The coalescence between content.
