Andrew Ryan is the founder of Rapture, the owner of Ryan Industries, and one of the main antagonists in the BioShock series. Although he only makes a very brief appearance in the game, he frequently communicates to players in the original BioShock via radio messages, and in BioShock 2 through tape recordings.
Born Andrei Rianofski in the small village near Minsk, Russia, Ryan witnessed the Russian Revolution which led him to his personal philosophy: the modern world was created by great men who strove to make their own way. Anytime "parasites" gained control of such a world, they destroyed it.
Fleeing Russian to America and changing his name, Ryan founded Rapture after successful making a fortune in America. Although initially a supporter of the American capitalist system, his contempt for its corruption and 'parasites' meant he soon became disillusioned with the system in his adopted country.
At the beginning of Bioshock, Ryan is still in charge of Ryan Industries, now devastated from the civil war between Ryan and Atlas. Losing the battle, Atlas sends Jack, whom has been brainwashed, to confont Ryan.
