Makai Kingdom's gameplay is similar to other Nippon Ichi Software games such as the Disgaea series and Phantom Brave. Most noteably, Makai Kingdom uses Phantom Brave's open movement and targeting system, but turns and attacks are resolved in the same way as they are in Disgaea.

Summoning
Overlord Zetta is not capable of fighting in tome form and therefore requires the help of other characters to fight for him. Choosing Invite, select the desired character and summon them to the stage. Typically, the player can invite up to eight characters in a single battle.
Stages
Players will accept missions and head to different maps where they must meet certain stage conditions, such as defeat all enemies or gaining a certain amount of points by defeating enemies, uncovering the map, and collecting/destroying objects. At the end of each stage, players are rewarded with items, experience, Hell (money), materials, or vehicles in increments of 100 up to 1,000 points per stage.
Movement
Each characters is restricted to a circle that shows their movement radius, allowing to move anywhere within the circle. After movement, a character can attack an enemy by selecting attack and choosing a skill and target.
Map Extensions
On most maps the player will have to uncover hidden sections, called Extensions, to access the rest of the map. These are uncovered by defeating an enemy or gaining an item with the word "Key" above their head. Revealing an extension may also trigger a random event, some good and some bad.
