This is the first Tales game in the series, but outside of battle it follows traditional rpg norms. With towns, dungeons and the overworld used as ways to traverse the world meet characters and interact with the world. Nakiri Dungeon is a dungeon cralwer but flows quite similar though there is no overworld.
Both Phantasia X and Nikiri Dungeon utilize the Cross Arts Aerial Linear Motion Battle System (XAR-LMBS) which is a heavily modified version of the standaard LMB system. This system made for more fluidity in character movement as well as allowing for more complex aeriel attacks. The system also gives the Nikiri Dungeon characters the abilities to hange outfits midfight wich would in turn alter their playstyles.
In the tales series Artes are used to dish out extra damage aside from typical character combos. In general these abilities are learned over the course of the game by leveling and in some cases side events. Moves are usually designated to one button and 4 artes can be mapped Linking these moves with your normal combos is the bread and butter of the Tales series in terms of being offensive.
