2007 - Weisman was inspired to create a video game in the Shadowrun universe after reacquiring the rights to it from Microsoft through his Smith & Tinker startup company but could not obtain the backing of other publishers.
March 2012 - Inspired by the success of the crowd funding model for other gaming projects, Weisman decided to start a Kickstarter campaign.
The team explained their decision to use Kickstarter to fund the game:
"The game we want to make is very humble by modern blockbuster game standards but it is still way beyond the ability of a small start-up to fund by itself. The restraints on the license from Microsoft made it impossible to get established publishers interested in Shadowrun and so it remained just a dream for a long time until Jordan saw the recent successes of some other veteran designers on Kickstarter.
Crowd sourcing to fund creative content represents truly profound change to the status quo. While we watch financial models for the creation and distribution of creative content continue to erode, Kickstarter charts a direction for how fans can directly impact development of creative content they want by funding its creation".
April 2012 - The Kickstarter project launched on April 4th and met its funding goal of $400,000 within 28 hours.
April 2012 - The funding period ended on 29 April 2012, by which time the project had gathered $1,895,772 worth of pledges.
The game will be developed on Windows and Mac platforms, as well as the iPad and Android tablets. A Linux port is also planned.
