Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is a traditional side-scrolling platformer with a twist; the titular Max can use his magic marker to draw on the screen, giving life to objects and allowing him to overcome various obstacles and puzzles.
Platforming
In typical platforming fashion, Max run, jump, climb and fight his way through a 2.5 dimensional game world, overcoming various monsters and platforming puzzle segments in order to find and rescue his brother Felix.
The platforming puzzles found in the game will often be based around the manipulation of the game's physics engine.
Drawing
The magic marker introduces another dimension to the platforming gameplay. Using the marker, you can draw objects, such as ropes or pillars, to help to overcome certain obstacles, or extend ledges to make sure you're able to navigate a particularly lengthy chasm.
Max cannot just draw wherever he pleases as he goes on his journey, but he is restricted to using his marker at only certain spots. These are designated by glowing spots whenever he needs to use the marker to pass an obstacle.
During his adventure, Max's marker will gain ever more powers that allow him to further manipulate and use the expansive environments to his advantage. It also means puzzles become even trickier and more complex as you progress.
Fantasy World
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is based in a fantastical fantasy world. You'll explore a wide range of locales, from sparse deserts, to eerie bogs, ancient temples and lush green forests.
Collectibles
In addition to normally traversing through the various levels in the game, there are hidden collectibles to be found. These are split up into Evil Eyes, of which there are 75, and Amulet Pieces, of which there are 18. For the Evil Eyes, Max will grab and destroy them, while he will simply collect the Amulet Pieces.
