Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - Gameplay

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is an online multiplayer action game with similar gameplay to Torn Banner's Half-Life 2 mod, Age of Chivalry. It is playable in both first and third person views and features graphically depicted medieval-era warfare involving swords, axes, spears, and other such weaponry.

Game Modes

Team Versus

In a team versus team game the player chooses to be on either the red or blue team, called the Mason Order and Agatha Knights in-game respectively. There are no gameplay differences between the teams; both teams have access to the same classes and abilities.

There are five different team-based game modes:

  • Team Deathmatch: In this game mode the teams compete in order to reach the kill limit. When this limit is reached, the enemy players can no longer respawn and survivors must be hunted down.

  • Last-team Standing: In last-team standing players cannot respawn except at the start of new rounds, and the winner is the team left alive at the end.

  • King of the Hill: In this mode the teams fight for control of a designated area. Holding the area for the required time in total wins the match.

  • Capture the Flag: In this match-type each team has a stationary flag near to their spawn area. The flag can only be picked up by the enemy team who must then take it to their base in order to 'capture' the flag. Captures can occur only when your own flag is there; killing an enemy flag-holder enables a team to retrieve the flag by walking over it. The team to reach three captures wins.

  • Team Objective: In this mode the teams adopt an attacker or defender role and are tasked with attacking/defending certain objectives (e.g. a barricaded door, NPCs, or another player). The team that successfully achieves its objectives by the time-limit wins.

PvP

  • Free-for-All: In the free-for-all game mode players must kill as many other players as possible within the time-limit. The player to get the most kills wins.

  • Duel: In this mode all players on the server are entered into a pool from which the game selects an opponent for you. It then spawns a separate arena for just those two players. The first to get two kills wins the duel; the player who win the most duels wins the match. All duels are conducted simultaneously ensuring that there is no que.

Classes

There are four character classes to choose from. The classes differ in their choice of weapons, speed, health, damage, and stamina. Each class also has a special ability.

Archer

The archer is the only class with a long-ranged primary weapon. Possessing high speed, low health, and poor melee capabilities, he should therefore focus on providing mobile fire support. The archer also does 50% more damage when melee attacking from behind.

Man-at-arms

The man-at-arms is the lightest and fastest melee class. Using mostly one-handed swords, his weapons lack both reach and damage and so it is best to use his speed to duck in and out of combat. His special ability is his ability to perform a dodge in any direction.

Vanguard

The vanguard is a medium class equipped by default with long-reach pole-arms. These weapons combined with his medium damage, speed, and health allow him to fill a general-purpose front-line role. His special ability is a charge-leap into battle.

Knight

The knight is the heaviest class. He has low speed, high armour, and high damage. He uses two-handed swords primarily, and uses less stamina when blocking enemy attacks. Because of these qualities, the knight is best used to hold the line.

Combat

Combat in Chivalry features a primary, secondary, and tertiary attack. The direction of the attacks can be reversed by using a modifier key, thereby enabling a player to link attacks together. All weapons have a rating from speed, damage, and reach, allowing a player to customise his character to suit his fighting style. Kicks and blocks (using either shields and weapons) can also be performed.

Combat involves reading your opponent/s and knowing when to block, attack, or run.The player who swings wildly will be at a distinct disadvantage and will quickly run out of stamina, inviting a killing blow.
