African elephants are huge land animals with a life expectancy of around 60 years. They are also renowned for being highly intelligent creatures.
They survive in the African desert thanks to their thick skin, which quickly becomes coated in mud and dirt to protect them from the heat of the sun. They enjoy lazing about in streams and ponds.
Although adult elephants have no predators, the African elephant is nonetheless an endangered species as a result of human activity and poaching.
