Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D side-scrolling game that bears a lot of resemblance to Metroidvania games, as well as games of the Souls franchise. Players start the game by creating a character and choosing one of many classes, which have a starting set of skills and equipment, then they are on a journey of fighting enemies and defeating bosses.
Classes
When you begin the game, you will create your character and then choose one of several different classes. These classes determine your starting skills from the Skill Tree, as well as what equipment you begin the game with.
- Knight - One of three classes that begins with a sword and only one of two that can wear Heavy Armor from the beginning
- Mage - Only class that begins with magic, as well as wands
- Paladin - Starts with a hammer and Heavy Armor, as well as a ring called Mending Band
- Thief - Starts with a shield, as well as bombs and throwing daggers
- Chef - Begins with an iron pot and doesn't start with any skills
- Cleric - Only class that begins with light armor and can use Prayers from the beginning
- Pauper - Begins the game with no skills at all
- Hunter - Only class that begins being able to use whips and crossbows
General Gameplay
The map in Salt and Sanctuary is split into many different areas, most of which are locked either by a door or requiring an ability of some kind. Enemies will attack you on sight and you can fight back with both weapons and magic, although not many classes start out with the ability to use magic.
Defeating enemies will sometimes earn you items, but you will always get salt and gold. The latter can be used to buy items and equipment from vendors, while salt will be used to level up at Sanctuaries. These spots are special rooms that are safe from enemies and are similar to bonfires from the Dark Souls games.
Sanctuaries
As mentioned above, Sanctuaries are rooms that act as safe havens from enemies. You are able to interact with a pedestal in the room that will respawn your character whenever you die. This pedestal will also allow you to level your character using salt, assign points in the extensive skill tree, join a Creed and even make Offerings.
