The Nintendo Game Boy, is an 8-bit handheld video game platform developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was released in Japan on April 21, 1989 as the successor to the Game and Watch line of video game platforms.
The Game Boy was created by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo R&D1. Redesigned versions were released in 1996 and 1998, in the form of Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Light (Japan only), respectively. Following it's release in 1989, the Game Boy and Game Boy Color combined sold 118 million units before being discontinued in 2001.
