I don't know how it happened but I started playing the other day and I had a msg come up on the screen but I didn't get a chance to read it, next thing I know I've got 10 golden keys and over 300 badass points. Not sure how this happened...

Once you have such a key, you can open the chest at any time but it is best to do it with a higher level character since the loot will scale to that character. Also, if you happen to have gotten a key, each account on your console will get a key. They aren't transferable unfortunately but they can still open the chest for you and you could also power level them if you have a maxed out character on your main account.
