Titan Souls
Release Dates: April 14th (PC), April 15th (PS4 & PSV)
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Developer: Acid Nerve
Platforms: PC, PS4 & PS Vita
Imagine a game where your sole purpose is to take on massive bosses in whatever order you’d like, with an insta-death mechanic, and only one way to attack (with a single arrow). Titan Souls sounds ambitious but I can happily report that what little I’ve played of it lives up to those ambitions.
The boss I faced at EGX Rezzed was a big gloop of green goo which divided into two once shot. Each glob of goo puts slime on the floor, slowing your movement across the stage, and so it becomes more and more difficult to keep alive as the fight goes on. Add to this that you need to fetch your single arrow each and every time you fire it, and you’ve got one tough, but ultimately very satisfying game on your hands.
Hue
Release Date: 2015
Publisher: N/A
Developer: Dan Da Rocha
Platforms: Unannounced
With its simplistic but beautiful graphics and charming presentation, Hue is set to become a hit indie title when it’s released sometime later this year. What makes it stand apart from other platformers is the fact that the “hue” of the background can be changed. This brings with it interesting puzzle mechanics, such as the ability to make obstacles in your way disappear once the background colour matches the object's colour, making it seemingly invisible.
I’m not sure how much further Dan Da Rocha can take this mechanic, but I'm certainly interested in finding out, and as can be seen from the trailer above the game absolutely oozes charm.
Inside My Radio
Release Dates: “When it’s done”
Publisher: N/A
Developer: Seaven Studio
Platforms: PC, PS4 & Xbox One
Announced and shown off as a part of Microsoft’s ID@Xbox project, Inside My Radio is looking to be a stylish platformer with a core mechanic that is centred around timing your jumps, dashes, and slams to the beat of the music.
Whilst the premise is simple, the game proves hard to master, and my limited time with the demo resulted in numerous deaths due to miss-timed button presses. Inside My Radio includes a visible sphere around your player, which helps to guide you through when to press your buttons, but even utilising this is challenging in itself considering how manic and hectic the stages become as you waltz your way through.
Kaiju Panic
Release Date: Unannounced
Publisher: N/A
Developer: Mechabit
Platforms: PC & Xbox One
Don’t let Kaiju Panic’s art style trick you into thinking this game is for kids, because it’s far from easy or simplistic. This tower defence/strategy game may have taken the award for cutest game to exist at EGX Rezzed, but its strategy and resource management isn’t childlike in any sense of the word.
With numerous monsters constantly trying to destroy humankind, you’ll be manically running all over the level trying to ensure multiple NPCs are healthy, assigning them to different structures, and helping to find missing pets. My brief time with the demo taught me how to build structures anywhere on the map whilst simultaneously defending my home town from monsters, and I have to say, it was pretty addictive. With no release date announced just yet, we may be waiting a while to get our hands on this crazily cute and delightful game.
