Nintendo Returns to Profitability, 3DS Sells 8.7M in 1 Year, Wii U Sells 3.4M

Nintendo, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, Pokemon Omega Ruby/Pokemon Alpha Sapphire

Nintendo has released its full year earnings report, which ended on March 31. The company has returned to profits for the first time in three years. Revenue dropped 3.8 percent to ¥550 billion, but profits beat a forecast of ¥35 billion and hit ¥41.8 billion. This is up from a loss of ¥23.2 billion a year ago.

Wii U sales failed to meet expectations for yet another year, however. Nintendo sold 3.38 million Wii U consoles, while the forecast was 3.6 million units. Japanese Wii U sales decreased to 530,000 units, from 890,000 units a year ago. America sales increased to 1.85 million units, from 1.29 million units, while in rest of world sales increased to 1 million units, from 550,000 units.

3DS sales were 27 percent short of the forecast for the fiscal year. Nintendo originally forecast 3DS sales to hit 12 million units, but actual sales were 8.73 million units. The New Nintendo 3DS sold 3.17 million units for the year, the New 3DS XL sold 2.45 million units, and the standard New 3DS sold 820,000 units.

Lifetime sales for the Wii U now stand at 9.54 million units, while the 3DS has sold 52.06 million units.

Nintendo did report strong software sales for its first party titles. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sold 9.94 million units and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS sold 6.75 million units. Mario Kart 8 sold 5.11 million units, while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 3.65 million units.

Looking ahead, Nintendo expects the Wii U to sell 3.4 million units and the 3DS to sell 7.6 million units during the next financial year.
