The older Nintendo 3DS models and the Nintendo 2DS are currently not able to read Amiibo figures. However, Nintendo has announced that an NFC Reader/Writer accessory will be released this Fall which will allow owners of those platforms to utilise Amiibo.
The NFC Reader uses two AA batteries and connects to Nintendo handhelds using wireless connectivity.
The accessory will be released on September 25th in North America for $19.99 and October 2nd in Europe.
