Harmonix: Adding Online Play to Rock Band 4 is 'on the Table'

Harmonix has outlined its plans for Rock Band 4 updates in 2016, in an effort to remain as up-front and transparent as possible with the community.

The two key new features that are coming in 2016 are practice mode and setlists. Both of these will be added in free updates.

Online multiplayer is one of the most requested features from the community, and it is on the table, however Harmonix isn't sure when it will be able to take on such a sizeable project. The company will be sending out surveys in order to better gauge precisely what it is the community most wants from an online mode.

Harmonix outlined the two key reasons the introduction of online play is such a large undertaking:

Online play with Rock Band is a big deal given the amount of different combinations of player (four potential instruments, different difficulties, song affinities between players, etc.). There is a ton of testing necessary as well technical back end to work through in order to provide a fun, stable experience.

For any feature development, especially features that have existed in our legacy Rock Band games, we want to be able to improve and refine wherever possible. In the case of online play, we have a lot of critical feedback on the Rock Band 3 design that we’d love to be able to address.

A smaller update will roll out in January and will focus on stability and performance issues. It should also fix some of the game's leaderboard issues.

Finally, Harmonix is also looking at adding new features to the game that haven't featured in the series to-date.
