Sony's PlayStation Vita has gotten a bad rap as of late, thanks to its struggle to find an expansive audience since its launch last year. However, thanks to the 2012 indie hit Retro City Rampage, some developers may want to take a closer look at the struggling system.
That's because, according to RCR creator Brian Provinciano, the Vita version of the game has actually proven to be the most successful. Provinciano posted on Twitter earlier today that "Indies should definitely jump onto the PS Vita. RCR's sold much more on PSN than XBLA and more on PS Vita than even PS3," going on to clarify that this does not include the free versions of the game given out to subscribers of PlayStation Plus.
Most interestingly, even the Steam version has been beat by sales on the PlayStation Network, with Provinciano adding that "Steam's done far better than [XBLA], but PSN has still done the best."
Provinciano was critical of Microsoft and the Xbox 360's online marketplace, stating that "It cost more to do the XBLA version than all other SKUs combined. Made more on all other platforms. XBLA: 'a learning experience."
Granted, I don't have the sales data in front of me, but it's worth noting that the Xbox 360 version came out almost a whole three months after the PC and PSN releases, so that may account for the sales disparity. Still, it's good to see the Vita having an edge for a specific title. Hopefully this success will convince developers AND consumers that it's a system worth investing in.
