During a DICE Summit panel, Bruce Shelley, Sid Meier, Brian Reynolds, and Soren Johnson got together to celebrate and discuss 25 years of the Civilization series. One of the more interesting facts to come out of the panel is that the series has now sold 33 million copies since Civilization debuted in 1991.
Civilization V - the most recent mainline entry in the series - and its expansions have sold 8 million units to date. Meier’s teams at MicroProse and Firaxis have created 66 versions of the game across all platforms and, based on Steam sales, the Civilization series has been played for more than an estimated one billion hours.
