UK Retailers Weigh in on PS4 Announcement, Potential Pricing

Speaking to MCV UK, a number of representatives from British retailers have given their opinions on how Sony has handled the initial PS4 announcement and what it should do going forwards.

Darren Cairns, of British-based online retailer Green Man Gaming, offers some pricing advice: “Obviously there is a balance to strike between building an installed base for the great games to follow and losing too much on each box, but £299 would be a good price.”

Paul Cannings, the executive at The Hut Group (another online retailer, which sells a wide range of goods) in charge of game purchases, agrees: "£250 to £299 would be good for entry level and a singing and dancing SKU for £350 to £375.” He goes on to say that he "thought the games looked awesome" and is "excited about the streaming functions."

Another game buyer, Richard Thompson of troubled retail chain HMV, is similarly full of praise: “It looks like the console is getting some really strong third-party support, and we all know how important that can be.”

There is, however, a dissenting voice in the form of ShopTo's CEO Igor Cipolletta, who said: “I was expecting a reveal like Apple’s. It would have said: ‘This week in store’. Sony still has a lot to learn.”

The PlayStation 4 is set to be released in late 2013. It has not yet been officially priced.
