Unofficially dubbed Illumiroom, Microsoft planned on creating probably the best gaming experience you can offer. Back during the conceptual stages, Microsoft released a demo of the Xbox Projector. During the video, it showed that Illumiroom turned the wall around your t.v to life. One piece of the demo was used for peripheral vision for FPS games. Another showed off lighting effects, like driving under a light in a racing game will project exactly that on your wall as if you really just went under a light. The demo also showed off recoil effects. When a gun is fired, the wall would ripple. Also it had the ability to change the look of your wall. Say you were playing Borderlands. The projector would scan your wall and create a color pallet and outlines to match that of the game, giving your wall the Borderlands feel and identical look.
Though this sounds like the best thing a gamer could want, Microsoft cancelled it. I think we all know the main reason why. AFFORDABILITY.
Not only would the projector cost hundreds of dollars each, but the technology put into it would raise the price to even higher standards. Maybe thousands for a projector set. On top of that, it would be incredibly time consuming for developers to integrate it into games, resulting in longer development periods.
I never was a big fan of Xbox. I own a 360 and play the hell out of Halo, but I never really liked their policies. Paying for online? MS Points? (I understand they changed it to currency now) Expensive machines? To me, the cancellation of the Xbox Illumiroom gives me one HUGE reason why not to buy the Xbox One. Exclusives are cool, but the only one catching my eye is Titanfall. I have a PC and could run the game a lot better than Xbox One. Halo 5 sure looks good, but really? A Halo 5? Why not make a new story for it?
Anyway the point is that MS has cancelled the project mainly because of affordability and cost for production.
What do you think? Are you upset about the cancellation? Did you think this would have been the best experience? Better than Oculus Rift? Or any VR?
