According to Michael Pachter, having seen a gap in the market, Electronic Arts has decided to put Criterion hard at work on a military shooter. Apparently there simply aren't enough shooters, and the Battlefield franchise in particular has seen far too few releases compared to rival franchise Call of Duty.
So Criterion, who are most well known for their work on well-known shooting IPs Burnout and Need for Speed Black, have been called in to work on a Battlefield spin-off.
Sarcasm aside, this is a legitimate rumour. Here's what Pachter had to say:
"Although EA has as yet to announce a Battlefield extension for FY15, we believe Criterion Games is working on a military shooter that may become a brand extension for the Battlefield franchise in FY15... We spoke with management on Thursday afternoon, and although they have not yet announced a version of Battlefield for FY15, they confirmed that our understanding is spot on and that if a version of Battlefield were to be released in FY15, it would be developed by a studio other than DICE."
