Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has laid out a 10 year plan for the company, and it involves expansion into health improvement products, including a 'Quality of Life Platform' that seems to be inspired by the success of their Wii Fit series of games.
Thus far details for the platform are quite vague, as Nintendo intend to fully unveil the concept later this year, but Iwata did describe the philosophy behind it:
"While we will continue to devote our energy to dedicated video game platforms, what I see as our first step into a new business area in our endeavor to improve QOL is ... the theme of 'health'. We wish to achieve an integrated hardware-software platform business that, instead of providing mobile or wearable features, will be characterized by a new area of what we like to call 'non-wearable' technology."
Quite what it all involves is far from clear at this stage, but it is clear that this venture will be independent and distinct from Nintendo's traditional focus on video gaming. This follows news that Iwata and other senior Nintendo executives took a pay cut after the most recent earnings report.
