It seems the rumors were true, as Amazon have announced the Fire TV, a streaming video set-top box that can also play games from some of the most well-known developers and publishers in the industry.
Video streaming services on the new Fire TV are not limited to just Amazon's. The set-top box will include other choices like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and WatchESPN, with more on the way. Music from Pandora, iHeartRadio, and your Amazon library will also be available on the Fire TV.
Video game titles from Ubisoft, Double Fine, Telltale Games, EA, Disney, Sega, and Gameloft will be coming to the Fire TV. Thousands of games are expected to launch by next month, including Minecraft, The Walking Dead, NBA 2K14, and the Amazon Game Studios-developed Sev Zero. A dedicated Fire game controller was also introduced, costing only $39.99. Amazon also announced the average price for Fire TV games will be $1.85, but free-to-play titles will also be available.
The Fire TV is equipped with a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card. Video and audio will be delivered in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound via HDMI- and optical-out ports. Connectivity will be handled through dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet port.
The new Amazon Fire TV starts shipping today and costs $99 USD.
