Philips filed a patent lawsuit against Nintendo on May 14th. The lawsuit specifically focusses on motion-controlled peripherals, including the Wii U.
The case claims infringement on Philips' “Virtual Body Control Device” and “User Interface System Based on Pointing Device." Philips is as a result seeking compensation to three times the value of the original patents, as well as wishing to halt the import of Wii U units.
This is not the first time Nintendo's had to deal with patent infringement claims - Tomita Technologies filed one over the 3D capabilities of the 3DS, for example. This case was later settled with Nintendo agreeing to pay Tomita royalties. The Wii and its motion controlled peripherals also came under legal fire multiple times.
With the track record Nintendo has of settling those lawsuits that seem to have a solid basis, it's very unlikely that Wii U imports would be halted even if Philips' claims are upheld, but it is a potential worst-case scenario.
