With just over 3 weeks left before the best teams in Dota 2 duke it out for the biggest e-sports prize pool of all time - now over $10 million - the prize pool for Valve's annual Dota 2 tournament continues to grow at a rapid rate.
This is all thanks to the help from community fund-raising, which has added almost $8.5 million to Valve's original $1.6 million prize purse. Dota 2 players have been able to purchase an in-game Compendium for £5.99/$9.99 (think of it as being like a programme for an event, with extra Dota 2-themed rewards being unlocked as the prize pool grows), and each purchase contributes $2.50 to the prize pool. On top of that, you can also purchase additional points to upgrade the Compendium and in so doing contribute even more to the prize pool.
The prize pool for this year's event eclipses the previous record holder, which was last year's Dota 2 International (TI3). Similar crowd-funding resulted in a total of $2.8 million last year.
This year's main event (TI4) will be held from 18th to 21st July at Seattle's Key Arena. Tickets for the event sold out in minutes, but the entire tournament will be covered in full and will be free to view on Twitch and within the Dota 2 client.
