The rumour that Microsoft was going to purchase Mojang has today been confirmed. The cost of the company? $2.5 billion.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, had the following to say on the acquisition:
"Minecraft is more than a great game franchise – it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.â€
Microsoft promise that Minecraft fans can expect richer, faster worlds and more powerful development tools in the future as a result of the deal. They've also shot down rumours that Minecraft will no longer be available on Sony platforms - the game will still be available on all of its current platforms, including PlayStation, and will continue to be updated.
Meanwhile, Markus "Notch" Persson, Mojang's co-founder, has announced that he's leaving the company. Mojang have published a short Q&A on the acquisition on their website.
