Most Disappointing Game of 2014

12th January, 1 replies

Assassin's Creed: Unity, DriveClub, Thief (2014), The Sims 4, Bungie Software, Ubisoft, Sony Computer Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Assassin's Creed, Thief, The Sims, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Like realising that your blind date is Sarah Jessica Parker or Kevin Spacey when every other participant is Gwyneth Paltrow or Ryan Gosling, disappointing does not mean that something is necessarily bad (indeed it may be very good), just that it does not match the quality expected from an eager audience.

For gaming, much of this disappointment is self-inflicted. Publishers hype up expectations through grandiose claims and misleading trailers, only for this aggrandisement to ultimately be met by nonplussed gamers who feel that the product was mis-sold. At other times, it may just be that a game promised much but failed to deliver. A game that matches one person's expectations may massively disappointment another. Those listed below particularly disappointed the gamrReview staff in 2014.

The Nominees Are:

Destiny

DriveClub

Assassin's Creed Unity

Thief

The Sims 4

And the 'Winner' is...
Assassin's Creed Unity

Congratulations to Assassin's Creed Unity for winning the award that no-one wanted. It joins an already teetering mantelpiece of awards such as 'Most Stupid and Convoluted Sci-Fi Storyline for a Major Series' and 'Worst Name for a Hero' (Desmond? Unless you're Desmond Decker then you will never be inspiring), plus the closely-contested 'Most Amount of Frenchmen Speaking in Regional English Accents' since Napoleon tried to infiltrate his army into England aboard cotton ships.

However, this award was won due to a disastrous opening; a major day-one patch was needed, quickly followed by a plethora of game-breaking bugs recorded for the internet's amusement, followed by yet another series of bug fixes and patches. Couple this with a frankly horrible framerate and the perfectly decent Unity (post 2nd patch) struggled to recover the excitement and goodwill that led to its initial strong sales.
