Amiibo support is coming to the 3DS today, Nintendo has confirmed to the website NintendoLife.
"A free update will also be released on 10th February for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS that will enable amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection to be used with the new systems."
The new systems Nintendo is referring to are the 'New 3DS' models, which will have the wireless technology Amiibos use already built in (NFC). A future piece of hardware will allow previous 3DS models the ability to use Amiibo characters, although at this time no release date has been confirmed for the accessory.
