Tom Kalinske, CEO of Sega of America during the 1990s, has come out criticising the company in a recent interview in which he states that recent studio closures and mass redundencies were "not inevitable".
In an interview with GamesIndustry International, Kalinske says that was he shocked to learn the company was closing its San Francisco operations, and that he believes Sega could have competed against Sony and Microsoft had it not been for two decades' worth of poor decision making:
"It could have been avoided if they had made the right decisions going back literally 20 years ago. But they seem to have made the wrong decisions for 20 years."
Detailing why he quit Sega in 1996, Kalinske discusses how he tried to push the idea of a Sega-Sony collaborative games console many years ago, but the board of directors rejected the concept.
Despite these criticisms Kalinske believes Sega can still avoid going the way of Atari:
"I do think some great brands obviously have been destroyed, Atari being one of them. Why didn't that survive? I think there's a lot of bad decision making involved in killing brands like that. I hope Sega isn't the same thing."
