Doom 4 was announced on May 7, 2008, after John Carmack hinted at it at QuakeCon in August 2007.
In 2008, John Carmack (the co-founder and technical director of id Software) stated that Doom 4 would look better than Rage, but that it would only run at 30 FPS on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (though it would be able to run at 60 FPS on the PC, and the multiplayer component would run at 60 FPS on all platforms).
In 2009, Bethesda Softworks acquired id Software and announced that all future id Software games would be published by Bethesda Softworks (including Doom 4).
Little new information has surfaced since then, though once id Software had completed work on Rage the core development teams shifted focus onto Doom 4.
Although screenshots appeared in February 2012 purporting to be taken from Doom 4, id Software's Creative Director, Matthew Hooper, quickly discredited them.
