This is the first Tales game in the series, but outside of battle it follows traditional rpg norms. With towns, dungeons and the overworld used as ways to traverse the world meet characters and interact with the world.
Battle System
Tales of Phantasia features the most basic form of the Linear motin battle system which is a staple of the Tale series. This version has enemies and players limited to only left and right movement though the system is still real time. combos based on artes and jumping are still possible.
Artes
In the tales series Artes are used to dish out extra damage aside from typical character combos. In general these abilities are learned over the course of the game by leveling and in some cases side events. Moves are usually designated to one button and 4 artes can be mapped Linking these moves with your normal combos is the bread and butter of the Tales series in terms of being offensive.
