| As the game is a project in development, all features that are presented on this page might not make it into the final product, although the stretch goals for the Kickstarter campaign will most likely guarantee it. |
Soul Saga is a Japanese-style role-playing game that will feature environmental puzzles and a turn-based battle system. The game draws heavy inspiration from a number of games, with Mike Gale putting his own unique twists to make it his own. Some features, thanks to the Kickstarter campaign's stretch goals being reached, include airships and combat using those (inspired by Skies of Arcadia), large-scale guild battles (think Suikoden II), and many more.
Combat
The player will find enemies on the overworld and running into them will begin a battle; sometimes, ambushes will happen where enemies will get the jump on you. The battle system is turned-based and will feature a turn order similar to Final Fantasy X, where the actions in the battle will change up the order of the combatants.
Enemies during combat will sometimes have puzzle elements to them. Sometimes you'll be able to utilize skills to weaken enemies or take advantage of their defenses. For example, an enemy is using a steel shield to strengthen its defenses by deflecting attacks. The player can use one of Mithos' skills to smash the shield and break its defense. Likewise, since the shield is made of steel, players can use a lightning-based skill to electrocute the enemy.
Energy Sources
Instead of the game using an universal energy system, such as Magic Points, each character will have their own unique energy resource. Mithos, for example, uses Focus, which allows him to build up energy by performing regular attacks and basic skills. Once he has built up enough energy, he will be able to use more advanced and powerful skills.
On the other end, Elise will use Gadgets as her resource. Each skill she has will use a certain amount of the resource, like her planting caltrops next to an ally to cause damage to any melee-based enemy using three gadgets. If her gadgets resource is getting too low, then she will need to waste a turn to restock them before she can use those skills again.
Extra Features
Mike Gale has added a number of stretch goals to his Kickstarter campaign that were met. These stretch goals will add more gameplay mechanics to the game, but not much is known about them at the moment. The following list will give details about the stretch goals.
- Airship - Players will gain access to an airship, that will allow them to explore the world of Soul Saga. Another stretch goal that was met will allow combat with the airship, where the player can encounter giant beasts and even pirates.
- Job Board - Since Mithos is the master of his own guild, the job board will give him access to a ton of side quests for the guild.
- Legendary Weapons - There will be weapons that the player can get that are granted their very own side quests.
- Guild Master - This one grants the ability to recruit even more playable characters to Mithos' guild. You will be able to find them across the world of Soul Saga.
- Guild Hall - This opens up a whole new aspect of the guild, where the player can recruit even more members and assign them to teams. These teams can be sent on jobs to get treasure, find dungeons, and even craft items.
- Forgotten Beasts - Similar to the Legendary Weapons, these are optional bosses that will put the player's abilities to their limit.
- Guild Battles - There will be large-scale battles that will put your own guild against others. This is similar to the war battles in Suikoden II, which has you split your characters into teams and battle strategically.
- Atelier of Souls - A completely optional dungeon that will be completely random in its contents.
- Garen's Saga - This will allow the player to play through a portion of the game through the eyes of Garen, the game's antagonist.
