Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a first-person adventure game. The game is a spiritual successor to Dear Esther, and as such, the gameplay is very similar.

Exploration
Whereas Dear Esther took place on a linear path, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is an open-world game which the player is free to explore at their own pace. Along the way, the player may run into people or interactive locations, which will open up sections of the story. The game is said to revolve around six characters, who will be voiced over.
Like Dear Esther, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is not an action-oriented game, and instead encourages players to focus on exploration, experiencing the world it creates, and uncovering the story. However, this game has more interaction than its predecessor, as it gives the player the ability to interact with the environment in small ways. The player will also be able to impact the story based on how they react in certain situations.
In addition to the interactions with the environment, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture allows players to walk, sprint, crawl and jump, which will allow them to more easily navigate the environment.
