Linux (GNU/Linux) is a Unix-like and POSIX-compliant computer operating system designed to be a free and open source software for development and distribution. The defining component is its Linux kernel, first released on 5 October 1991, by Linus Torvalds.
Originally developed for Intel x86-based computers, it has been ported to more computer hardware platforms than any other operating system. Linux also runs on embedded systems, such as mobile phones, tablet computers, network routers, building automation controls, televisions and video game consoles.
