Dota 2's upcoming The International 5 eSports competition today broke the record for the largest prize pool in eSports history - a record which was set by the same game at last year's International, which managed to total just shy of $11 million. The current total is $11.49 million and counting.
The base prize pool for the event, which takes place between 18 pro teams on August 3-8 at the Key Arena in Seattle, was set at $1.6 million by Valve. The other $10 million or so has come about via community contributions (in the form of a cut of the revenue generated by a purchasable in-game compendium for the event and other cosmetic DLC Valve has released for the game), in what is now an annual event for the Dota 2 community.
There are 64 days to go until the final, and at least one more major piece of DLC is set to be released that will boost the prize pool considerably, so expect the total to comfortably exceed $15 million. Players on the winning team are expected to walk away with well over $1 million each.
