Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Sells 411K First Week in Japan, PS4 Sales Triple

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had a strong launch, debuting at the top of the Japanese charts for the week ending September 6th, according to Media Create. The game sold a combined 411,199 units for the week.

Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 4 version was the top selling edition, with sales of 293,652 units. The PlayStation 3 version sold 117,547 units.

Last week's top game, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS), fell two spots to third with sales of 106,823 units. Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (3DS) is down one spot to number four with sales of 49,542 units. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (3DS) fell three spots to round out the top five with sales of 30,840 units.

Other new games in the top 20 include Infinite Stratos 2: Love and Purge (PSV), which made its debut in ninth position with sales of 7,643 units. The PlayStation 3 version of the game debuted at 16th with sales of 2,973 units. Lego Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin (3DS) debuted at 11th with sales of 5,011 units.

PlayStation 4 sales tripled week-over-week to 54,494 units off the back of The Phantom Pain's launch. The Nintendo 3DS sold 34,757 units, the PlayStation Vita sold 11,099 units, and the Wii U sold 10,232 units. The PlayStation 3 sold 2,817 units and the Xbox One sold just 180 units.
