A lengthy and in-depth report on Kotaku has revealed that Destiny went through some pretty rough development issues, including an entire story re-write.
Destiny has ultimately proved a financial success, but traces of these development struggles were evident from the get-go. Much of the gaming press and fans alike criticised the game for having a weak narrative, and this report by Kotaku sheds some light on the reasons behind the sparse story.
It draws particular attention to the fact that many of the flaws that are most commonly pointed out are a direct result of the design team's desire to allow players to choose the order in which they complete missions themselves. "[The design team] would have to cobble together and cut and restitch and reuse a bunch of stuff that was already built for a different thread, but now tie it together in some way that fit this amorphous, ‘You pick which way you’re going in the director'", noted one source.
Joe Staten, one of Destiny's original writers and designers, left Bungie to join Microsoft mid-way through the game's development. It was speculated at the time that the move was partly in response to his original vision being ruined, and this report lends credence to those rumours.
It wasn't just the narrative that was hacked, slashed, and reworked. Several areas from the game were also cut, some characters were scrapped entirely, while others were thrown into different roles. The stranger, for example, was originally an assistant to the now-absent Osiris.
